IMAGINARY LINE

この映像作品は、日本・ベトナム・インドネシア・フィリピンの音楽家、映像作家、美術作家が協働で制作したミュージックビデオです。

2016年から続くプロジェクトの発展として、映画のシーン撮影で用いられる用語「Imaginary Line（想定線）」をテーマにしたプログラムでは、個人同士の関係性によって作られる未知なるイメージを想像して表現を行い、現在の文化状況に対して自らのシーンを創りだすための想定的・仮想的な線を引くという意図が込められています。

様々な都市のアーティストが出会い、多様なイメージや手法が交錯した3つの楽曲・映像からは、アジアにおける同時代の文化相互影響や、フラットで新しい協働モデルのあり様が見えてきます。

This is a series of three music videos created collaboratively by a team of musicians, filmmakers, and visual artists from Japan, Vietnam, Indonesia, and the Philippines.

The latest iteration of an initiative ongoing since 2016, Imaginary Line derives its name from a technical term used in filmmaking to describe a visually implied axis between characters in a scene. The project aspires to draw hypothetical or virtual lines for imagining and expressing unknown images produced through the relationships between individuals, and for those individuals to create their own scenes in response to current cultural conditions.

From these three music tracks and videos that encompass the encounters of artists from different cities and the crossover of their diverse images and approaches, there emerges a new model for equal collaboration and contemporary cultural interaction in Asia.

同プロジェクトのシリーズ「Bordering Practice」にて日本、フィリピン、インドネシアの音楽家のコラボレーションにより制作されたハイブリッドな楽曲。インドネシア・ジャカルタのDouble Deerがディレクションを手掛けた映像では、伝統的な舞踊や衣装をモチーフに、インドネシアの歴史や、ジェンダー、LGBTに関する今日的な課題までを浮き彫りにする。

This hybrid track was made by Japanese, Filipino, and Indonesian music artists taking part in the Bordering Practice project. The music video overseen by the Jakarta-based Double Deer uses traditional dance and clothing to explore the history of Indonesia as well as topical themes related to gender and LGBT issues.

Reinhard Samuel Maychaelson Gunawan（映像作家）［インドネシア］

1993生まれ。インドネシアを拠点に映像監督と脚本家として活動し、短編映画からウェブシリーズ、広告からミュージック・ビデオまで多岐に渡る映像を制作。その作品は、ジョグジャカルタNETPACアジア映画祭等での上映や、Rising Filmmaker賞、Popcon Asia 2018、Viddsee Juree賞（2016、2018）等多数受賞。ジャカルタを拠点とする独立系プロダクション兼クリエイティブラボRubamera Creative Labも主宰し、多文化を有するインドネシアにおいて寛容性の意識を向上させることを目的にYoutubeで「Neo Batavia」シリーズをプロデュースし、脚本も手掛けている。

PARKGOLF (Beatmaker, Producer) [Japan]

Born in the Hokkaido capital of Sapporo, Japan, PARKGOLF started making music professionally in 2012. He attracted attention with his release on the netlabel Maltine Records in 2013. In 2015, he released his first album Par on Day Tripper Records. "Kiss Me," his first online release, reached the top of the iTunes electronic music chart. His wide-ranging career has included producing the major label debut by DAOKO as well as supplying tracks for a variety of artists. In 2017, he released his second album, REO. In 2018, he released "xaradise" in collaboration with the South Korean rapper Jvcki Wai.

Reinhard Samuel Maychaelson Gunawan (Filmmaker) [Indonesia]

Born in 1993, Reinhard Samuel Maychaelson Gunawan (aka Rein) is an Indonesian filmmaker. Known as a director and screenwriter, his work ranges from short films to web series, commercials, and music videos. His work has screened at Jogja-NETPAC Asian Film Festival. His accolades include the Rising Filmmaker award at Popcon Asia 2018 and the Viddsee Juree Awards in both 2016 and 2018. he is also the founder of Rubamera Creative Lab, a Jakarta-based independent production and creative lab with which he has written and produced the YouTube web series Neo Batavia, aspiring to raise awareness of tolerance especially in the multicultural nation of Indonesia.

ユースを中心に支持を集める東京のラッパー・Tohjiの1stミックステープ「angel」収録曲「HI-CHEW」の映像を、ベトナム・ハノイを拠点とする気鋭の映像制作集団AntiAntiArtが制作。互いのクルーがハノイと東京を行き来する濃密な交流のなかで作られた本作は、その協働スタイル、さらにはビジュアルイメージの形成方法ともに、ボトムアップな同時代性を含むものとなっている。

The up-and-coming Hanoi-based group of filmmakers AntiAntiArt created a new music video for “HI-CHEW,” a track originally included on “angel,” the debut mixtape by the popular young Tokyo rapper Tohji. The result of a close exchange between two different teams spread across Tokyo and Hanoi, the video’s collaborative style and techniques for creating the visual images embody a bottom-up approach that is typical of the contemporary scene.

ハノイを拠点に活動する映像制作グループ。2018年にヒップホップのイベントで出会った彼らは、アーティストPlaaasticとともにAntiAntiArt（AAA）を創設。サイバーパンクの要素を含めた映像を特徴とし、ファッションや音楽、ダンスを扱った多数の映像作品を発表している。これまでに国内外の多くのファッションブランドとともに映像を制作。ベトナム独自のユース・カルチャーを創りだし、さらに自身の表現スタイルを世界に発信することを目指す。現在は10名が所属し、ベトナムで育ちつつあるユース・カルチャーを牽引する存在として注目を集めている。

Tohji (Rapper) [Japan]

Born in London and raised in Tokyo and Yokohama, Tohji is an emerging music artist who has quickly attracted an ardent following among young fans especially in Tokyo for his uninhibited mix of hard and mellow sounds. He released an EP in late 2018 as part of the music collective Mall Boyz. The tracks were selected for many official playlists on streaming platforms. His 2019 single “Rodeo” hit number one on the SoundCloud Japan All Genre Music Chart. In March 2019, he held the “Platina Ade” music event at Shibuya WWW, attracting a record-breaking audience of 550. Released immediately afterwards, “on my own way” was another hit on the SoundCloud chart. Tohji is now one of the most highly anticipated artists of his generation. AntiAntiArt (Filmmaker Collective) [Vietnam]

AntiAntiArt (AAA) is a Hanoi-based group of filmmakers. After first meeting at a hip-hop event in 2018, its members established AAA with the artist Plaaastic. Known for taking inspiration from cyberpunk, AAA’s output has included films about fashion, music, and dance. It has to date produced many films for fashion brands at home and abroad. The group aspires to develop youth culture in Vietnam as well as its own original style, and disseminate these around the world. With ten current members, AAA continues to attract attention as a leading force in Vietnamese youth culture today.

彫刻家・菅原玄奨による現代の匿名性をテーマにした作品シリーズ「Someone」からインスピレーションを得て、similarobjectsが同名タイトルとなるオリジナル楽曲を制作。本映像では、デジタル上のエラーを具像化した彫刻を、再びスキャンし、バーチャルな空間に投影している。デジタルとアナログの積層とも言える本映像は、今日的なリアリティのあり様に新たな視座を投げかける。

Taking inspiration and the title from Japanese sculptor Gensho Sugahara’s series Someone that explores the nature of contemporary anonymity, similarobjects created an original music track. This music video features sculptures embodying digital errors that have been rescanned and projected into virtual spaces. Layering up both the digital and analog, the video presents a new perspective on today’s reality.

Jorge Juan B. Wieneke (aka similarobjects) is an electronic music educator and producer from Manila, the Philippines. Seeking to aurally express the intersection of video games and art by utilizing the theoretical frameworks of polystylism, spirituality, and the esoteric, he reaches into the depths of the present day with older, almost-forgotten cultural lenses. His soundscapes fluctuate between contemporary chaos and the distant, hypnotic cries of nature. He also teaches at De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde, and founded his own music school, Cosmic Sonic Arts, where he fosters a spiritual approach to creating music.

Gensho Sugahara (Artist, Sculptor) [Japan]

Born in Tokyo in 1993, Gensho Sugahara completed postgraduate studies at Tokyo Zokei University in 2018. He has attracted attention for his series of sculptures made from fiber-reinforced plastic, exploring texture and tactility. In his practice, he employs the familiar sculptural form of the statue in order to examine the appearance and anonymity of people today. His major solo exhibitions include “invisible” (TAV GALLERY, Tokyo), while group exhibitions include Busan Annual Market of Art 2019 (BEXCO, Busan), “The Metamorphosis” (EUKARYOTE, Tokyo), “A day to touch the voice of beauty” (GINZA SIX, Tokyo), and “Future Artists Tokyo 2018” at Art Fair Tokyo (Tokyo International Forum). His awards include the Gunma Youth Biennale 2017 Encouragement Prize.

国際交流基金アジアセンターでは、近年アジアにおけるアーティスト同士の協働が活性化しているエレクトロニックミュージックの分野に焦点を当てた活動を続けてきました。

今プロジェクト「Imaginary Line」ではアジア各都市の音楽家、映像作家、美術作家が参加し、国際協働制作した3作品のミュージックビデオを発表します。また、それに伴うライブパフォーマンスプログラムとして本公演を開催します。

アジアにおけるエレクトロニックミュージックの多様な広がりを体感できる一夜になることでしょう。

For 2019 and the project’s final year, it will aim to go beyond the “borders” that were

previously foregrounded, offering instead a platform for the Asian artist and director peers to join

their networks together and discover contemporary scenes that are simultaneously local and global.

Musicians, filmmakers, and artists from different cities will come together to work on three music

videos to be released online, followed by the project’s finale that will be a live concert in Tokyo.

インターネットの普及に伴い、急速に変化する音楽シーン。制作環境の刷新、視聴環境の変化、そしてSNSによるボトムアップなシーンの形成は、新たな音楽文化と、国や地域を越えた文化の相互影響を生み出しています。

本プログラムでは、こうしたインターネットの普及以降にある表現と文化の状況に注目し、アジアの各都市にあるローカルなレーベルをつなぎあわせ、新たなシーン（表現が生まれる環境）を形成していく試みです。

2016年には、欧米・アジアにある市場・表現・文化の相互影響とネットワーク社会によって流動化するアジアの文化状況を捉えるべく「Liquid Asian Pop Scene」をテーマに、トークやライブを開催。これを踏まえ、2017年からは、それぞれのコミュニティの特異性や共通性を確認・共有するために、アジアの同時代の文化状況に対して境界（Border）を意図的に引く「Bordering Practice」をテーマに、マニラ、ジャカルタ、東京の音楽家による楽曲の国際協働制作を行いました。プロジェクトの最終年となる2019年は、「Bordering Practice」で意識された境界（Border）を超え、アジアの次世代のアーティストやディレクターが自らネットワークを繋ぎ合わせ、地理を超えたグローバル／ローカルな今日的なシーンを見出すべく、様々な都市の音楽家と映像作家、美術作家が参加し、国際協働制作による3作品のミュージックビデオを制作しました。映画のシーン撮影で用いられる用語「Imaginary Line（想定線）」をテーマにしたプログラムでは、個人同士の関係性によって作られる未知なるイメージを想像して表現を行い、現在の文化状況に対して自らのシーンを創りだすための想定的・仮想的な線を引くという意図が込められています。

それぞれの地域やコミュニティの状況にあわせて編成した様々なプログラムにより段階的・継続的に展開してきた本プロジェクトの4年間の活動には7ヵ国30組のアーティストが参加し、東京、マニラ、ジャカルタ、ホーチミン、ハノイで公演等を実現しました。
